Bug Description
Binary package hint: apt

Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10
foo@bar:/etc/apt$ apt-cache policy apt

When performed a "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade", the system started to work as expected, then a dialog box asked to restart the system. Apparently something failed during such reboot as I've ended in a root prompt (#). From there I've rebooted the machine, selected the new kernel at grub and everything seemed to be ok but when I'm finally at gnome I've realised no distro upgrade was performed at all, meaning everything looked just like before the upgrade attempt.
foo@bar:/etc/apt$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 9.10 \n \l
Now if I try to run the distro upgrade again:
foo@bar:/etc/apt$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

My dist-upgrade was interrupted due to a problem with the hylafax-client package. Removing that package and continuing "apt-get dist-upgrade" (by running it again) did not work.
apt-get upgrade or
apt-get install -f
did not work.
Rebooting the machine caused that I cannot reach the machine via ssh... (maybe the system dropped to a root shell when booting again...)
