Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-session

It's an upgraded 10.04 from 9.10.

Everything was fine until I ran gnome-session in terminal (I originally wanted to run gnome-session-save) and I got an error and then dozens of windows were generated in the task bar that I had to logout. I was able to input name and password and it seemed the system accepted them, but after two or three seconds I was brought to the login screen again.

The issue is reproducible to all desktop types, KDE, gnome, and xterm.

I can't remember if I ran 'gnome-session' in root privilege.

There's no problem about the disk usage, all below 40%.

I worked out a workaround to login to gnome desktop though, switch to console and then run following commands:

sudo service gdm stop
startx

Thanks.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance.

During fresh installation of Lucid and Natty, I didn't see this issue. I am unable to check if it still exists in a upgraded case.
