Hi

Can confirm this on Kubuntu Maverick (10.10) using KDE 4.5.1 - 4.5.3 packages from official repo.

Use case:
I installed Nouveau drivers from ubuntu repo after switching from Nvidia binary (ubuntu package) due to CPU suckage and it worked very well until this sudden freeze. Only device working is the mouse. When I ssh in from my N900 X is consuming 99% CPU and the only way to rescue the system is to either issue a reboot via the SSH terminal or hard reset the notebook.
I tried switching to NV driver but it doesn't seem to work or support multiple monitors.

To try to eliminate the freezes I have turned off desktop effects in KDE. Haven't seen a lockup yet but have only been running for a few hours with effects turned off.

I get the same backtrace in Xorg.0.log as in the original report. Bug #624409 and #563598 seem to be related to this one.

System
Intel 32bit Dell M1330 XPS, Nvidia card, 1x 1680x1050 external flat panel connected via HDMI, 1x 1280x800 notebook display.

no such luck, just had a freeze up with both displays active and desktop effects turned off. Trying again with only one display active.

Sorry to report that nouveau is just too unstable. Switching to "nv" or if that doesn't work it's back to the Nvidia blob.

Found a workaround via the Nouveau bug tracker to this which is to turn off acceleration in Nouveau.

sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-kms.conf (guess it can be called something else ?)

add "options nouveau noaccel=1" to this file and restart, making sure the nouveau driver is installed and there is no trace of the nvidia binary driver on the system or in any xorg.conf/xorg.conf.d file (that part bit me).
Multiple monitors with KDE desktop effects have been working for a couple of days or so with this setup.

Hope that info helps someone.

Also having the same issue in Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha, instantly reproducible by running 'gitk' or 'hg view'. Something that Tcl/Tk is doing seems to trigger the problem immediately.

The workaround suggested by James appears to eliminate this issue (although my mouse cursor is noticably skipping around now... oh well).

Likely this bug is something in the linux kernel's nouveau drm driver. If that's true, then booting a newer version of the kernel might resolve it. Has anyone tested if this issue still exists with Lucid 10.04.4?

As we're on the cusp of the next LTS release, it would be worth testing if this issue exists in the 12.04 beta. This can be checked using a USB live image. You can get it at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/, and use USB Disk Creator to make a boot drive. Please update this bug report once you've tested. (If you've already tested any version of ubuntu newer than Lucid and already know it works, that's sufficient testing, just mention that here.)
