Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add the log files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' to this bug report as separate attachments? Thanks in advance.

Here there are. Hope they help. "apt-term.log" wouldn't attach, nor
could I copy it to another directory. The file size is reported as 405.3
KiB, but opening it with Kate or Kwrite shows only an empty file.

Also, for what it is worth, the upgrade broke my NFS links to my Linux
server. I can still see and work with the server directories using
Samba, but I need to get the NFS system back for security. Not sure how
long that will take me.

Thanks for the files

The relevant error is
---
Unpacking replacement openoffice.org-base-core ...
lzma: Decoder error
dpkg-deb: subprocess <decompress> returned error exit status 1
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/openoffice.org-base-core_1%3a3.2.0-7ubuntu4_i386.deb (--unpack):
short read in buffer_copy (backend dpkg-deb during `./usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.2/program/libdbali.so')
No apport report written because the error message indicates a dpkg I/O error

It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted archive or a faulty media. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal ( Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal ) :

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. If it doesn't then please run a filesystem check.
Thanks in advance!

I'm still feeling my way around with Linux.

When you say "try performing the update again" do you mean the whole of
Kubuntu 10.4 LTS? or just the Open Office application?

If you mean the whole of Kubuntu, I don't know how to force that to run
again.

Thanks,

You just need to reinstall the openoffice application.
