After a restart of the computer, everything seems to be running smoothly. Kubuntu 10.04 LTS is installed.
I do not know why the error came up but it turned out to be not a very serious problem.

The solution was that I first had to remove all texlive packages and then select and installed them again. There could have been a dependency problem.

Now latex works properly again.

(before that I received the message:
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.10 (TeX Live 2009/Debian)

This is a problem in jtex, no bug in TeX Live, see http://bugs.debian.org/565995. Please reassign it to the correct package.
