Bug Description

Hi

After GDM Login Gnome hangs for a few seconds before the gnome panels and menus appear. It just shows me the wallpaper, sometimes the pidgin window (in the video you'll see gnome terminal) (which starts at gnome-start).

Here is a video...

I have the same problem.

If Gnome has loaded once, I can log out and back in or change user without the delay.

@OwenL
Yes, the delay is just after the first login.

I solved it..

Having read a round disabling the FDD in the BIOS and commenting out the entry in fstab fixed it.

I then found I had a problem with Ureadahead but reinstalling that fixed it.

Boot all the way to desk top is now about 15 seconds.

Disabling the FDD in bios fixed it for me. But why? Ubuntu 9.10 didnt have this problem.

But thx a lot @OwenL

Same problem with Lucid here on a Compaq Evo Laptop.
With Karmic it was fine.

I've commented out the fstab entry and blacklisted the floppy module. Sadly I can't disable FDD in BIOS.
This fixed the reappearing messages on the console, but GNOME still hangs for a few seconds at the login.
This might be because of HAL which is still trying to probe the FDD.

Ok, I was able to fix it.
Blacklisting the floppy module needs to be followed by "sudo update-initramfs -u"
Otherwise the module is still loaded on boot...

Cheers

I tried blacklisting floppy. But no floppy module was loaded in the first place.
Also did the "sudo update-initramfs -u" part.
I also reinstalled ureadahead.
There is no floppy in the fstab and also no floppy in the Bios, since the problems on a notebook.

Hope somebody knows how to help.

Hi,

id like to identify the matching package but i cant identify it. Do you think, this is very userfriendly? Would be nice if there is an Ubuntu moderator who identifies the correct package an maintainer for the reported problem.

Hmm... Assigning to linux even if I'm not sure (could be gdm's fault). Anyone investigate?
By the way, do you still experience this issue?
