Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

Hello,

installing 4 or 5 packages at the same time with ubuntu software center results in a heavy memory consumption by software center (about 450 MB).
I'm using ubuntu 10.04 LTS netbook remix on an Acer d250 netbook with 1 gb RAM.

I've taken a screenshot of system monitor with the high memory consumption by software center.

Bye
Sergio

I can confirm that software-center has a huge memory leak. Each time you click on "Provided by Ubuntu" it will consume additional 25 MB of RAM. Seems like it's recreating the cache each time.

@Martin: the memory leak you describe is a different issue, which I can confirm, and for which I reported bug #577540.

I can also observe the memory usage increase when installing and removing applications. However the increase seems to happen at the end of the (un)installation, not during it.

After installing and then removing amarok and abiword, the memory consumption of software-center had jumped by approximately 100MB which were never re-claimed.

Thanks Olivier, I found no other bug about memory problems, so I though the cause may be the same one as for this bug. Confirming the new bug.

With the current branch in
lp:~ubuntu-core-dev/software-center/lucid
I can not reproduce this anymore. The memory leak fix that was backported from trunk seems
to fix it (thanks to Olivier).

Ubuntu 10.04 desktop reached End of Life on 9 May 2013, and Michael suggests the problem was fixed anyway. If you still experience the problem with a current version of Ubuntu (12.04, 12.10, or 13.04), please reopen this bug report and provide any further details.
