ubuntu installer grub install failure - RAID controller

when trying to install ubuntu 10.04, installing grub fails. at first, the installer tries to install to /dev/sda, even though the hard drive in the system is via a raid controller, and is under /dev/mapper/isw_cdfcbdcfed_RAID-0 . BTW, this device name is recognized by the partitioning section of the installer

clicking on 'advanced' at the end, the drop down list for grub devices list all the proper devices on the system:

/dev/mapper/isw_cdfcbdcfed_RAID-0
/dev/mapper/isw_cdfcbdcfed_RAID-01
/dev/mapper/isw_cdfcbdcfed_RAID-02
/dev/mapper/isw_cdfcbdcfed_RAID-05
/dev/mapper/isw_cdfcbdcfed_RAID-06

interestingly, the devices below are moted differenty:

/dev/mapper/isw_cdfcbdcfed_RAID-02 -> /dev/mapper/isw_cdfcbdcfed_RAID-0-1
/dev/mapper/isw_cdfcbdcfed_RAID-03 -> /dev/mapper/isw_cdfcbdcfed_RAID-0-2

anyway, no matter which of these devices one selects, the OK button in the dialog box is disabled - thus, in effect one cannot make the installer install grub in the appropritate location

this is on an HP Envy 15 laptop
