Bug Description

i am having a problem with the final release of 32 bit Lucid. When I try to use the desktop installer I get the Ubuntu logo and then the screen goes black. I tried using the alternate installer and was able to install, however I get the same black screen when Ubuntu tries to boot. The computer is a old Dell Inspiron 700m with a Intel video card, and it ran perfectly with 9.10. I know that my CD was fine because I used it on another computer and the install went fine.

I have not even been able to get to a command line so far to get more information so sorry for not providing much. If someone can tell me how I can get to a command line and any information needed I am happy to provide it.

The same problem! From CD to 10.04 do not install, hang and all.
After installing the first 9.10, then upgrade to 10.04, after the reboot - black screen. Boot via safe mode with failsafeX - issued a message "(EE) Failed to load module "i810" (module
does not exist, 0). "
Try "modprobe i810", such as error-free, added modprobe i810 in /etc/rc.local and performed dpkg-reconfigure xorg
After that was already at boot splash display, then again the same black screen.

Sorry for my bad english.

Hi Paul,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 572763

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I am using the final stable release of 10.04. As for the apport-collect and kernel I have no way to do this. When I start the computer I get the Ubuntu splash screen then it goes black. I never get any further than a splash screen.

sounds like a dupe of 554835. seems to be affecting everyone with the 855 chip.

workaround:

boot into failsafex or console or whatever
sudo su
echo "options i915 modeset=1" >> /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf
update-initramfs -u
reboot

Same issue after an update 9.04->9.10->10.04.

I'll try these command-lines.
