Bug Description

I installed the new Ubuntu and my Dell 4600 has no sound with Ubuntu 10.04. I have checked the alsamixer and reset all muted and raised volumes, and once I close the terminal and go back it needs adjusting again, like it doesn't save the settings. The software identifies both "sound blaster and ICH5" sound cards and have tried to correct the problem on both setting in alsamixer and controls on sound. Is anyone else having the same bug?

Hi tenbears2,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 572757

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Completed steps but the system failed. Lost video and no screen. The test to change Kernel to regain sound again was a failure.

I have tested further with the Kernel version. I found that in order for my system to work or be tweaked enough to work, I had to install Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. Even then it was kinda iffy. I don't know if I'm the only one having this problem. I have the Dell 4600 with the Navida sound card.
Then I got the idea to try Kubuntu 10.04 and to all amazement, I have sound. A guess would be that the mixer and or drivers on the Ubuntu 10.04 are not complete. A guess but that's all I have to go on.
