Simply using Synaptic to fix broken packages after the upgrade failed fixed any problems for me. I haven't seen any evidence of instability.

The problem is not really in dpkg but in the package that setup the diversion without creating the directory in which the file is diverted. I guess it has been corrected in the mean time in the nvidia packages.
