What's the output of
$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-5

It seems to cause the problem.

My current display drivers in ubuntu 9.10 i386 is xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4

I had to use the above mentioned once coz the new one which comes with 9.10 dint give me the correct display resolution.
