Robert,

Maybe make a rule that if there is seemingly nothing in the area, to draw a predefined shape or fall back to another theme or something?

if the image file for the dock is transparent, what if you simply add a highlight to the border of the image file, similar to how the selected dock glows when editing its settings?

See the screenshot: there's an orange glow around the selected dock. perhaps you could outline all of the docks with a gray/silvery color to draw attention to them?

@Tom: thats what Daniel was saying, basically we need to just make sure we draw *something*, which then will get a glow.

true. I think there might be a misunderstanding; when the transparent dock theme is selected, is it simply a transparent "alpha channel" image, or is it in fact no image at all?

If it is in fact a transparent image, then it might not be too difficult to add a secondary glow to the other 'non-selected' docks.

Do you get what Im saying? I could run a mock up really easily to explain if not..
