Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I've just downloaded the 10.04 Alternate iso for i386 desktop edition and started the upgrade.

During this, the process required the original install CD on six occasions (luckily I'd also downloaded it and burnt that to CD too). You can see the messages in my posting on Ubuntu Forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1466406).

The various dialog boxes given during the upgrade are listed below. The upgrade halted and did not reboot. When I rebooted the PC, 10.04 appears to be working, although there is no splash screen - the first screen (after Grub) is the user logon screen.

Sorry for the delay in replying to this - the upgrade was performed on a PC in our office which is closed until Tuesday (we have a May Day public holiday today here in the UK).

Thanks for the files.

The relevant error is
---
Extract templates from packages: 66%E: Could not open file /media/cdrom0//pool/main/d/dkms/dkms_2.1.1.2-2fakesync1_all.deb - open (2: No such file or directory)
E: Unable to determine the file size - fstat (9: Bad file descriptor)
E: Read error - read (9: Bad file descriptor)

And so on for other files of the archive. Your media is very likely corrupted. Could you please check it or try another media.

Thanks.

The media certainly appears to be OK.

Do you think the problem may be caused by the invalid filename:
/media/cdrom0//pool/main/d/dkms/dkms_2.1.1.2-2fakesync1_all.deb

Note the "//" double slashes between "cdrom0" and "pool".

Thanks for your help with this.
