Bug Description

there are dependency problems.

My system is karmic without any strange changes.
I still have grub, not grub-pc, because the system had been upgraded from jaunty and older versions.

additional note: the problem occured when the kernel packages were upgraded from the kubuntu update notifier. It had displayed only these two packages to be upgraded.

I resolved the problem and got to the previous state by uninstalling the unconfigured packages, then installing the older kernel packages with 'apt-get install linux-generic=2.6.31.20.33 linux-image-generic=2.6.31.20.33'

Then doing 'apt-get dist-upgrade' installed the new kernel packages and additionally the packages grub-common
grub-pc

Hi Ernst,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

The problem was with dependencies while installing the package, not with running the kernel, so I cannot see why testing an upstream kernel packaged the same way should be interesting.

These are the relevant lines found in /var/log/apt/term.log

Could not find postinst hook script [update-grub].
Looked in: '/bin', '/sbin', '/usr/bin', '/usr/sbin'

I now assume that the problem has something to do with the fact that I had tried to move from grub to grub-pc some months ago, but eventually removed (uninstalled) grub-pc again.

These are of course quite singular circumstances so feel free to just discard this bug report.
