Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv9574ea with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M graphics card.

I have damaged my Vista HDD so decided to try UBUNTU 9.10 from the boot CD.
This only worked in F4 Safe Graphics Mode, but it seemed OK so I installed it on the HDD.
Then I noticed that I could only have the screen in 800x600 so I clicked on the Hardware Drivers icon which recommended that I install the v185 driver. I downloaded it and activated it which needs a reboot.

Now the problem is that it starts to load after the reboot and then suddenly I see blue boxes all over the screen and it then goes black, HDD activity stops and I have waited several minutes - nothing.

I rebooted from the CD again as there seemed nothing else I could do and reinstalled UBUNTU.
I repeated the graphics update again, in case I had made a mistake, but no all I got was a black screen again.

Any suggestions?

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.
