4) Instead: This xorg crash report shows up in my gnome panel. Everything appears to be working fine...

 - guest additions are installed in Ubuntu
 - compiz is enabled in Ubuntu, desktop effects set to normal

Suspecting it was the vbox video driver failing. Have you seen this on a newer release?
