Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Just after loading the Nouveau driver blank screen appears and the computer becomes useless. Actually the system continues to load and seems to work but I can't see anything. Thus booting to live image or trying the installation from the live image does not work. Setup from alternate image works. But then I get the same blank screen when the system starts to boot just after the nouveau drivers loaded. Booting into recovery mode does not work either. I could not even get a virtual terminal so no bug report.

Hi Bryce,

I sent the information with apport. But I should inform you that I can not login to my system with nouveau even with a vt. So I disabled nouveau and now using nvidia binary drivers with the famous :) EDID hack. I hope this information will be helpful for you.

On the other hand, if there is another thing I can do to help debugging please let me know.

Thanks.

Affected with vaio VPC-CW2X

Managed to install with alternate install; then:

* boot with the alternate
* mounted my new install, chrooted inside them
* copied /dev directory to /$mntpoint/dev, mount proc to /$mntpoint/proc
* edit /etc/default/grub, added "nomodeset" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
* exec update-grub

Reboot and worked :)

I won't needed to reboot if ubuntu came with ssh, like everyone else.

I have the same problem on a Vaio VPCCW1S1E whic uses:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 230M] (rev a2)

at the moment I cannot use driver nouveau (which actually cause my screen going black and making laptop useless) and probably cannot give useful report.
As for the message #24 I installed on another kernel (2.6.31 the binary nvidia driver).

Trying to load kernel 2.6.32-22 (the one which has nouveau installed and which is unusable) I managed to retrieve these information from kernel.log
