Bug Description

Having spent 5 days trying to figure out why I get a Parted_Server crash during the install, I finally narrowed it down to having a 512mb FAT SDCard in the laptop's card reader

The problem would occur if attempting to install from the live cd desktop in ubuntu 10.4 beta and RC and I would get the error

Sorry the program "parted_server" closed unexpectedly. just after choosing the keyboard layout as it was trying to load the partition screen

If I attempted to install Ubuntu 10.4 beta or RC by booting from the cd, it would just hang at the same place, just before the partition screen, and Kubuntu 10.4 RC would just hang on the loading screen

Attempting to install all of the above mentioned distros using the Wubi installer, the setup would hang on the "Getting time from a network time server" part of the install, I assume this is just before it accesses the disks

After removing the 512mb FAT SDCard, every install, including wubi and real partition installs, including booting to live cd and installing straight from the cd, worked flawlessly.

The bug itself comes from having the SDCard in the card reader at the time of install

When parted_server crashes, can you please click the "report problem..." button and follow the instructions to file a new bug. Alternatively, you can run `apport-collect 571016`.

Do you get this same "problem can not be reported" message if you try to reproduce the bug with the latest daily-live CD: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20100427.1/

I've filed a new bug #660942 against parted as it seems this is where the underlying cause of the bug lies.
