Printing to HP LaserJet 4L via CUPS/IPP doesn't work

Bug Description

On a Dapper Drake desktop printing to the parallel-port-attached HP LaserJet 4L works perfectly. When printing to the same queue via a Dapper laptop on the same LAN (using an IPP URI of ipp://HOSTNAME/printers/QUEUENAME), printouts don't come out. Instead, a printout containing the following appears:

-12345X@PJL
@PJL SET MANUALFEED=OFF
@PJL SET ECONOMODE=OFF
@PJL SET COPIES=1
@PJL SET RET=MEDIUM
@PJL SET DENSITY=3
(one line of binary data from job follows)

It appears that somehow the opening escape character that triggers PJL mode is being lost. This happens regardless of which of the four available drivers (ljet4, hpijs, Gutenprint, and one other i can't remember) is selected.
