Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Bug linked closely with bug 501988. I hope I will add some informations. It is no longer possible to rip CD into mp3 using rhythmbox or sound juicer. The tag rip "mp3 CD quality" appears in the menu modify the profiles, but not in the "output format" menu despite the checkbox "Active?" is checked. If it's a dependency problem, an information should be displayed, because it's impossible to find.

Besides, I have all the mp3 encoding programs because RipperX works fine

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better, however the report is missing some information, may you please run rhythmbox as: rhythmbox --debug &> rhythmbox-debug.txt ; perform the steps to reproduce the bug and attach that resulting log file to the report? Thanks in advance!.

This worked for me:

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse

mp3 option is now visible.

This is clearly something many people have encountered, and the advice is readily available in Google if you are willing to search to find it.

The real issue is that ugly codecs and such are automatically notified as required when first trying to playback an MP 4/ MP3 file in Ubuntu default media player. However, this only installs the reader, not the MP3 writer.

If a package is required to enable functionality, that should be notified in the same manner. Seems like this might be available in simple to use common code as many programs in Ubuntu suggest installing additional packages when required.

As noted, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse is the only thing required to enable MP3 ripping.

I don get it to work
 sudo apt-get remove gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
does not help for rhythmbox.
MP3 is enabled then in ¨audio CD extractor"/ ¨sound juicer"
The list of possibilities there is then the same as in ¨edit profiles" rhythmbox.

However, the list shown in rhythmbox is completely different from the list under ¨edit preferences¨

whoah.
I added a type ¨test¨ in the edit preferences.
Then, rhythmbox just exited (no messages, nothing)
after that, all formats (including MP3) are shown.
Sounds like the selection dialog has some problems.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. A new version of Rhythmbox is available on Maverick and we are wondering if this bug is still an issue for you with that version? Could you please test and comment back? Thanks in advance.

10.04 ripping worked for me after installing the necessary packages.
Upgraded to 10.10 today and can still rip.
Have not tried a from-scratch install to verify if any improvements have been made in the usability issue reported here.

So, I was having a similar problem, and then I tried what "jan" accidentally did, and it worked. Sweet. Thanks, jan.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
