Bug Description

Binary package hint: plymouth

No image during boot or shutdown. This was fine in Beta 1 but a Beta 2 update broke it. I waited to see if it would get fixed but it still has not.

8 small terminals appear along the very top of the screen for a split second during both boot and shutdown, rest of the screen blank. Its extremely tiny so i cannot see wha'ts what.

Also, the same spot the exact same size will appear all purple with the rest of the screen black, also for a second or two.

Other than this occurring, the screen is either black or the monitor isn't being sent a signal, it bounces between the two during the process. So besides the 8 terminals and the purple strip, my boot/user experience is pretty much black screen until the login appears.

Previously the load screen loaded during both boot and shutdown no issue.

Affected machine is a dell 2350, on 10.04 RC, fully updated. My other 2 machines are not affected by this.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and help to improve Ubuntu.

The behavior change since beta1 is a change in linux to disable KMS by default on the i8xx series intel video chips, as a workaround for various X crashes (bug #542208, bug #563277). If X was stable for you with the previous kernel, you can add 'i915.modeset=1' to your boot options to restore the previous behavior.

Aside from this, any issues with the display under the current kernel are probably bugs in your video hardware's support for displaying a 640x480 VGA console; there's probably not much we can do to help for this, short of being able to turn KMS back on by default.

Reassigning to the kernel.

Hi f00fyf00fer,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

With the latest upstream kernel, this issue does not occur. Now I can see the console running through its course during boot. The load screen eventually pops up for approx 1 second and goes to the login.

For shutdown, a flash of the console and then the shutdown splash comes up as normal.

f00fyf00fer,
In this context, when you say 'upstream kernel' are you referring to 2.6.34 or the current Lucid kernel 2.6.32?

Thanks!

Noel Arzola, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily kernel folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
