Bug Description

Regression from 2.6.32-19. On this Gateway M275 convertible tablet (i855 chipset & video), -21 will boot, but either at the point of displaying the "Ubuntu" splash or just before, the screen will go black and it's not possible to switch to a pty. Magic SysRq key does not appear to be functional either.

I can boot successfully into recovery mode, and X will come up if I have it use a generic display configuration.

With -19 it works as expected.

I have all updates as of 2010-04-26 1239CDT installed.

Hi bthylafh,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 570299

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

This bug still exists in linux-image-2.6.32-22.33. The laptop will, however, boot successfully on the 2.6.33-020633-generic kernel from ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/.

I'll attach the results of apport-collect shortly, while the laptop's booted on the .33 kernel.

It's definitely not my software configuration. Same symptoms when I boot from the official 10.04 i386 livecd.
