Bug Description

Binary package hint: checkbox

When I try and run System Testing It brings up the Splash screen with "Welcome to System Testing! Checkbox provides tests to confirm..." and then a dialog with "Gathering information from you system..." pops up, but the progress bar just goes from side to side, never stops no matter how long you leave it to run for.
If i look at the process, it is a zombie. (STAT - Z, COMMAND - [python] <defunct>)

graeme@zoidberg:~$ uname -a
Linux zoidberg 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

Not sure if this is related, but last 4 entries in my dmesg:

[ 3655.382013] [drm:subconnector_show] *ERROR* Unable to find subconnector property
[ 3655.382077] [drm:select_subconnector_show] *ERROR* Unable to find select subconnector property
[ 3655.405975] [drm:subconnector_show] *ERROR* Unable to find subconnector property
[ 3655.406094] [drm:select_subconnector_show] *ERROR* Unable to find select subconnector property

I can however run checkbox from the command line: checkbox-gtk --log-level=debug --log=checkbox.log takes me through all the tests fine and lets me submit the results.

As a side note, System Testing under System -> Administration does not have an icon set.

I have this problem too. It happened to me when i started "System Testing", chose next and i was prompted for the password but i accidently chose cancel on the password dialog. After that, the progress bar kept going back and forth forever.

Same symptoms. Ran sudo checkbox-gtk from the Alt-F2 window, checked the 'run from terminal', I gave it my su password, it said welcome to System Testing and the 'gathering information from your system' box has the bar running side to side. Now the program won't quit. I'll upload my apport data.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Oneiric Ocelot. See bug 588539 for more details.

For those of you still running Ubuntu 10.04, there's an update coming for checkbox which addresses bug 553328 and could mitigate somewhat the faulty behavior you reported, you can test it by enabling the proposed source and updating checkbox. See here for instructions:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed

Also, you can wait a few days so the update makes its way to official updates, then Update Manager will offer to install it.

If you have a critical need for the fix for bug 588539 to be "backported" to previous versions of Ubuntu, please do steps 1 and 2 of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention, or let me know so I can put the fix through the SRU procedure.

Thanks so much for your report!
