Bug Description

I have just upgraded my Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04-RC.
Since this upgrade I no longer can start KDE sessions. I can log into KDM and the splash screen appears but the animation is killed before it is finished. Then the login tune is played and the screen stays with the background shown. No menu bar, no right mouse click menus. In most cases (but not always) it is possible to use shortcuts like ALT-F2 or ALT-CTRL-DEL.
I already have created a new user with a blank home directory for testing with the same result.

The process list shows a <defunct> nepomukserver.

Hardware:
* Lenovo X200 with Intel graphics (latest xorg with the memory leak fixed)
* 3G RAM

Many thanks in advance,
    Lutz

Ok, I just found the solution in
  http://www.linuxforen.de/forums/showthread.php?t=262880
I needed to "apt-get install kdebase-workspace" manually after the dist-upgrade.

Best regards,
    Lutz

Wow!! Thanks for letting us know about this! I still tend to think things like this are a bug as surely it should just work without having to find random advice and do extra complexities?

Anyway, it's good to hear you have solved it :)
Congrats and regards from
Tom :)

Well, technically spoken it is not invalid but a real bug:
* KDE does no longer work after an upgrade so the upgrade process is buggy.
* Before the upgrade this was a KUBUNTU so I actually expect to have a fully operational KDE after the upgrade.

I have this same problem in combination with the following:
If I change the theme of the login screen, kubuntu will not get to it, but will freeze instead at the kubuntu logo.
When I try to logout, restart or shytdown from the K Menu, the system does nothing.
When I type "sudo shutdown now" or "sudo reboot" at the console terminal, the system does poweroff, but a blue very low res screen is shown with some messy data on it.

update-manager should handle this.
