Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have use Acer C300 notebook with Intel 855GME chipset.

Ubuntu Karmic works good with intel driver and composing. I upgraded to Lucid.
Ubuntu Lucid in text mode works good.
Bud when the xorg loads, the computer halts (CapsLock, NumLock didn't work).

If I try to load older kernel (2.6.31-17 from Karmic) it boots normally.

But when I try again 2.6.32-20, it halts again.

If I remove package xserver-xorg-video-intel, it boots normally with 2.6.32, but when install it back - halts again.

In dmesg.log I see last strings:
[ 26.346445] ppdev: user-space parallel port driver
[ 27.110466] [drm] DAC-6: set mode 640x480 0

But with 2.6.31 kernel next are:
[ 27.201755] [drm] DAC-6: set mode 640x480 0
[ 27.362196] yenta_cardbus 0000:02:01.0: CardBus bridge found [1025:0038]
[ 27.362218] yenta_cardbus 0000:02:01.0: O2: res at 0x94/0xD4: 00/ea
[ 27.362222] yenta_cardbus 0000:02:01.0: O2: enabling read prefetch/write burst
[ 27.365527] lib80211: common routines for IEEE802.11 drivers
[ 27.365532] lib80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'NULL'

What I can try to prevent halting? Can I give any additional info for you?

WIth DRI re-enabled in xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu5, it is possible that this issue disappears. At least we got a flood of similar reports when DRI was disabled in -3ubuntu3. Please update to -3ubuntu5 when it becomes available on a mirror near you and close this bug report if it is no longer an issue.

I try upgrade to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu5 now, reboot, but got system halt too. With 2.6.31 kernel works normally, even with composing effects.

We're having problems with your graphics chip in Lucid. Some people experience severe instability, and some of what we've done to try and fix that has made other systems less stable. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes has a list of work-arounds for people experiencing these problems - I think that “Enabling KMS” is the one that will work for you.

Could you please check whether that works for you?

Thank's, "Enabling KMS" method from wiki helps me, all works good, with compositing too.
Maybe add this method as default for chipsets like mine?

Suffer exactly the same issue with a Dell Latitude D505. Intel 855GME video chipset. Upgraded to RC and stem stops on restart. Tried reinstalling from RC disk and suffered same issues with a known good CD.

There is already a bug for karmic:
477972 [i855] Karmic / i855GM / Fujistu Siemens Amilo M7400 : Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i85

and Lucid:
511001 [i855] Lucid Freeze shortly after X startup (needs KMS blacklist?)

and a general MASTER bug:
541511 MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

This bug is both for Karmic and Lucid, so it could probably be closed as duplicate to 541511.
