Mplayer is not imported in Launchpad/Rosetta because it's a package from main and we are not (yet) able to handle those translations with language packs so what the package ships is exactly what upstream had at the time it was packaged in Ubuntu.

What I don't know, and should be checked by Mplayer maintainers in Ubuntu, is whether the package has any problem with the Russian translation provided by upstream and that's why you get it in English. You will need to wait for them to get an answer on it.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

Is the lack of Russian translation still a problem in Hardy?

Thanks!

mplayer upstream is not localised itself. What makes you think it was at some point localised?

Russian localization exists in help/help_mp-ru.h, and could be enabled with ./configure --language=ru (plus some outdated mans)./m

The problem is that mplayer's localisation is only working at compile time. If comment #11 was implemented, mplayer wasn't able to print messages in english any more.

We'd really need someone to convert mplayer's localisation system to gettext. Any volunteers please get in touch with me privately.
