Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

Empathy sometimes shows a "[person] has joined the room" line for every person in the channel when the user joins an IRC channel. This behavior is incorrect because: 1) the other people didn't just join the room, the user did; 2) it only happens some of the time, so even if it's intended behavior it's inconsistent.

As I said, it doesn't happen every time I join an IRC channel, but it does happen often. Seems to be more frequent when I have a slow connection or when I'm joining large channels (like #ubuntu on freenode). Steps to reproduce:

1) Connect to IRC
2) Room menu -> Join...
3) Account:[IRC Account], Room: #channelname (e.g. "rww_ on chat.freenode.net" and "#ubuntu")
4) Join
5) Maybe observe lots of /join notices in the channel window

The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME.

I'm no longer able to reproduce this bug on several connections and channels (including the ones that were doing it originally), so I'm changing status to Invalid.
