Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

Release : Kubuntu 10.04 RC AMD64
Package : xserver-xorg
Problem Description : When starting live CD session instead of logging in to a Kwin interface it starts on console mode (meaning that the hole screen is the console). Trying to explicit start the kwin reports that no X server is not running. Trying to start the X server explicit leads to a blank (black) screen. When power down (button press) i can see the init cursor
of the X server (X) instantly and then i am directed to the console again for something like a second and then to the blue GUI screen with the kubuntu logo prompting to remove CD. In both cases of start-up and shut-down the GUI screens with the logo of kubuntu are shown.

Hardware Information :
VGA compatible controller : ATI Technologies Inc RV730 PRO [Radeon HD 4650]
Host bridge : ATI Technologies Inc RD790 Northbridge only dual slot PCI-e_GFX and HT3 K8 part
Audio device : ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
Audio device : ATI Technologies Inc R700 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4000 Series]
CPU : AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor
Motherboard : MSI 790FX-GD70 (790FX Northbidge)

Notice that the 9.10 version of kubuntu works fine on that hardware. Also notice that in the working 9.10 version i am using a custom kernel 2.6.32 (official) with custom built fglrx 8.712 (ATI 10.3 official driver). In the 9.10 release i had similar problems with the 10.2 ATI driver. So i assume that is either the X Server or some faulty driver package (if any is used). The X.Org X Server 1.6.4 of previous version seems to work fine with both 2.6.32 kernel and the latest ATI fglrx drivers (with the exception of 10.2)

I hope this info is useful for a better release.

This is possibly https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29834 which is fixed upstream in kernel 2.6.35.8. From the changelog:

commit 0097ad30cacd143b61ae58f0e9830ae8be3c6c79

drm/radeon/kms: fix potential segfault in r600_ioctl_wait_idle

    commit e488459a0e131acc9e14df093cfee740bc431953 upstream.

radeon_gem_wait_idle_ioctl can apparently get called prior to
the vram page being set up or even if accel if false, so make
sure it's valid before using it.

    Should fix:

Constantinos Koukos, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Thank you for your understanding.

This bug report has sat incomplete for almost nine years and did
not expire due to bug watches. Probably fixed upstream but as
reporter did not respond to comment #2 will close as 'Invalid'.
