Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Problem: Since upgrading to Lucid(Beta 1) from Karmic, I have been troubled by the inability to shutdown my Samsung NC10 netbook using the System > Shutdown or Shutdown applet in gnome. I am now at Lucid RC level for all curent fixes and this problem remains. The same is seen when performing a reboot.

For the most cases these options does nothing. Repeated selection of the shutdown option changes nothing. To shutdown or reboot I have to use the terminal and sudo shutdown -h now.

This did not happen in Karmic and it happens 80% of the time in Lucid. I have experienced this with multiple levels of the 2.6.32 kernel.

those options are not used in the standard installation, does the indicator session work correctly or has the same bug too?

Changed in gnome-panel (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low

This is most likely bug 544139

Sebastien, these are indeed standard options, just not default. As all these options bring up the same shutdown|reboot|suspend|hibernate selection panel, the symptoms are the same.
I have used the default option, now known as the MeMenu, which I do not like and therefore choose not to use and instead use the equally valid alternatives.
I do hope that your choice to mark this as low was not ifluenced by your definitions of what is standard or default and what a user should or should not be using.

Chris,
I am not sure that 544139 applies. My netbook has an Atom processor which does not support VT. Also nothing else fails to wok just the inability to shutdown the system via the standard methods without the need to open up a terminal.

the choice to set as low is because you are the only user so far to have this issue which indicates it's really a corner case bug or a local configuration issue but not really a concern for the default installation

Ok, I'll accept that. I'm also willing to provide as much debug as necessary to get this fixed.

Well, he isn't the only one. I have the same symptom, when I select shutdown or reboot from the indicator-applet, a window will appear to confirm but when I click yes nothing will happen. The pc keeps running.

I have very limited/no time to do some precise bug tracking, so apologises.

For now: it seems related to openoffice.org. The problem occurs only if I used it during the session. I've enabled the quickstarter.

I have Ooffice installed and I use Quickstarter.
THe next time it fails to shutdown, I'll kill QUickstarter and then try the shutdown again.
If that allows a shutdown then we have our suspect.

The Open Office quickstart tool is clearly having an impact.
Following on from the above post when I shutdown this afternoon, initially it did the total lack of action I am coming to expect. I then did a clean exit of the OO quickstart tool and then shutdown worked!

So something, within OpenOffice and probably the quickstart tool, is interfering with the normal shutdown processing on lucid.

What additional debug is needed?

I'm getting this on clean install of Lucid (fully up to date) on a laptop. Nothing happens on the screen after selecting logout, shutdown or restart. Nothing on dmesg. Kernel is 2.6.32-22-generic. Due to its intermittent nature, it's difficult to work out the exact circumstances for the glitch. However, I suspect that if I don't use Open Office (even though I have the Quickstarter applet loaded), then it works OK. As soon as I use Open Office, then logout etc doesn't work. dmesg shows nothing. Please let me know what diagnostics are required.
