Bug Description
Following cirumstances:
* an old disused workstation which works as an domain server
* happens to have two disk drives residing on the same IDE channel
* both drives contain different Versions of Ubuntu CDs
* what exactly the hardware is I can append later
What happened:
* I tried to install from an Ubuntu Server 10.04 beta2 CD
* the Boot-loader (ISOlinux?) shows the correct Options
* after choosing "Install Ubuntu server" the Kernel is loaded
* after that the Locales are questioned
* the next screen has a red background and an error message like "ubuntu-server.seed not found"
* changing to a shell and looking after it shows: only ubuntu.seed is there
* altering the kernel call is just a small help; after this comes a message like "Data not found"
* after that you cannot proceed with the install
The clue:
* because I tried to rescue the former os (Ubuntu server 8.04) with an Ubuntu Desktop 8.10 this CD still was in oine of the drives
* after I was booting the 10.04 beta2 from the other drive and the kernel was loaded, the data source switched to the drive with the 8.10 in it
* naturally from there the data couldn't be loaded
reproducable:
* yes, with the 10.04 Server and Alternate
the Question:
* can anyone reproduce that? And why is this even happening?
The Solution:
* after getting rid of the Desktop CD and having only _one_ CD in both drives together, the installation worked like a charm
my guess:
* somehow crippled because of using two drives on the same IDE channel
* I think, SATA would fix this automatically
This is one of my favortites: finding the strangest bugs without wating it :)
