Ever since I installed the Karmic Koala my system (Acer Core 2 Duo laptop) crashes every couple of days. The GUI crashes, a login prompt is visible for a while and then the system freezes.

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Maverick Meerkat.
