Installer crashed

Bug #56696 reported by Paul Whittaker

Bug Description

Bug is similar to
 #56674: installer crashed
 #56673: Installer crash
 #56640: Installer Crash
but falls over in different position

This is on a (slightly old) Dell Precision 530, single 36GB SCSI disk.

Two notable things I can think of which were interesting to this installation:

  - One of the existing partitions I asked to mount as /media/scratch (and left entirely untouched in the partition editor) was an apparently bad FAT32 partition. A "Go back/Continue" notification box had appeared shortly after hitting "Install!"

  - Security patches couldn't be downloaded because I haven't yet told the system about the web proxy; that timed out with a "Can't get security patches: [Ok]" (or equivalent) box at the 84% stage

Rest of details follow. (Apologies; can't see any "Attach file" button/option; using cut & paste.)

Retrying installation with net connection set up properly and the FAT32 partition fscked and fixed still gives crash with identical traceback.

Fixed. Make root filesystem ext3, not xfs. Details below.

------------------
Installer was crashing as soon as it said "Configuring boot loader...".

Experimenting with grub-installer showed that things weren't working correctly. This was the setup:

 - New root partition at /dev/sda2
 - Partition mostly installed; installer only failed after setting up most of the files on the system.
 - Mounted partition at /mnt/sda2

Running this:

grub-install /dev/sda --root-directory=/mnt/sda2

displayed message to effect that "if you run this on non-xfs filesystems, you'll get a segfault which can be ignored; this is due to xfs_freeze", and then hung.

Retrying install with new root partition formatted as ext3 rather than as xfs proceeds completely successfully. Didn't try it without the net connection, though.

All working, for now.

Thanks for your report. Due to some reliability problems with GRUB and
XFS, you need to use a non-XFS root filesystem or create a non-XFS /boot
filesystem. The fact that the partitioner doesn't warn you about this
up-front is also bug 47848, and is fixed in dapper-updates.

Also, in the future, please include the log files as attachments. It makes the bug report much easier to read and deal with.

Yeah about that - you may want an 'attach file' button on the bug report
page so that this can be done. I saw that there was one after the report
had been made but by then it was too late.
