Bug Description

Binary package hint: xubuntu-desktop

Wishlist - Xubuntu needs an VNC server out of the box c.f. vino in Ubuntu.

As a lightweight windows manager it's more suited to a server environment than gnome.

Thanks for your report. Your idea might get more attention and have the possibility of being implemented if you would submit a specification for this.

You should first check whether it already exists at the Ubuntu specs page (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+specs) in Launchpad. If that is the case, feel free to contact the drafter of that spec about your comments/suggestions. Otherwise you can start writing a spec following the steps described in
        https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FeatureSpecifications.

Thank you for your bug report. A VNC server is a thing that most users won't need, and Xubuntu wouldn't be as light as you say if we shipped by default all those applications. Moreover, you can easily set up a VNC server after install if you need one.

+1 for this.

I understand the point about light-weight. But the other point behind Ubuntu is it Just Works. I've looked at some of the HOWTOs (e.g., http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=122402) and a) they don't do the same thing since they run on :1+ instead of :0 like vino and b) they are way too much like work. Could I do it, sure. Will I bother, no, I'll switch back to Gnome, I've spent enough time goofing around with this issue already.

As for a spec, how about:

Description: VNC server for [xfce]
VNC is a protocol that allows remote display of a user's desktop. This package provides a VNC
server that integrates with [xfce], allowing you to export your running desktop to another
computer for remote use or diagnosis.

I take it back, installing and running x11vnc pretty much did what I wanted. The only catch is that it doesn't seem to install any kind of menu item, so you have to just know it's there and run it yourself. *Very* impressive little program I hadn't known about.

vino, the same vnc server on ubuntu can be installed/configured on xubuntu with 3 commands:

sudo aptitude install vino
vino-preferences
/usr/lib/vino/vino-server &&

/usr/lib/vino/vino-server needs to be added to auto start-up

or you could ln -s /usr/lib/vino/vino-server /usr/bin/vino-server
and then just use vino-server to start it

ok, so it's not the easiest solution. xubuntu almost always seems more difficult :[
