Bug Description

Binary package hint: xemacs21

Ubuntu release : Ubuntu 9.10 - le Koala Karmique (french version, 64 bits)
Xemacs version : 21.4.22-2ubuntu1
Installed xemacs packages :
   xemacs21 xemacs21-bin xemacs21-mule xemacs21-support psgml tuareg-mode xemacs21-basesupport xemacs21-mulesupport
Others :
   emacs22 emacs emacs22-common emacs22-bin-common emacsen-common emacs-goodied-el libanthy0

Hardware is a desktop 64bits PC (Dell T3400).
The windows manager is Gnome, and all pachages are uptodate w.r.t. this distribution (april 19th, 2010).

Symptom :
Each time I start xemacs, I get the message : "(1) (xim-xlib/warning) Warning: XCreateIC failed." in a warning xemacs window.
The message reappears randomly sometimes while I use XEmacs. No need to open some file to see the message, just start xemacs alone.

Related ressources :
I saw on a xemacs forum (forgot which one, sorry) that this is more due to Ubuntu that Xemacs, or more precisely, the xemacs package for Ubuntu. However, no solution was provided, which is why I post a bug report here. Xemacs do not seems to be really affected by this, however I'm getting bored to see the error message all the time. Any suggestion ?

Many thanks,
Mathieu

While trying to solve this problem I came across http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=296437 where Carl Brune writes: If I "export LANG=C" or "unset XMODIFIERS" then the error goes away.

I'm using the workaround of unsetting XMODIFIERS now.

Same issue on xubuntu 14.04 & XEmacs 21.4.22. The workarounds from kai-b seem to work. I wonder what the fix breaks though.

Affects Ubuntu 16.04 (XEmacs-mule 21.4.22) as well.

Setting "XMODIFIERS" to an empty value lets the problem go away. Likely, the problem is caused by the particular value of "XMODIFIERS" ("@im=ibus", here).
