Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Happens with lucid default kernel 2.6.32-21-generic, need to start failsafeX there.

Using old karmic default kernel 2.6.31-20-generic, X starts but refrains using DRI which it did on karmic.

Might be due to kernel module i915?

So, besides the lockup, how to tell the X driver not to disable DRI? (Also lucid kernel deactivates kernel modesetting for i915.)

Can you please try booting, adding “i915.modeset=1” to the kernel boot line? We've disabled KMS by default in the hopes of fixing another serious crash bug on the i855 chip, and this bug may be an unexpected consequence of that change.

I tried and it works. But there is still another problem. It's not possible to use graphical effects. Moreover, when I resume from standby the system is unusable because all fonts are invisible.

- i915.modeset=1 fixes KMS, kernel log clean, no problems

- X.org intel driver automatically disables DRI, (WW) me about i845/855 hardware. How do I persuade him to play it risky? (Quite a lot of DRI things were stable in karmic.)

- plymouth seems to not get through, no visible output but cursor, just init telling me in daemon log that plymouth-stop pre-start process terminated with status 1. Will file another report against that.

- plymouth bug report is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/567249
- it was reassigned to a bug seeming duplicate of this one here and to this package
- will re-reassign it to linux since it seems to be kernel problem then

There is no way to re-enable DRI in the existing patch. However, since
it seems that none of the work arounds we have been able to try fix it
for everyone - and indeed all seem to introduce equally serious problems
for a different set of people - we'll be dropping the DRI disablement
patch before release and document all the various workarounds different
people have found.

The hack of putting i915.modeset=1 to the kernel boot line is not necessary using driver version 2.11 from http://ppa.launchpad.net/glasen/intel-driver/ubuntu repository. This upgrade also solved the visual effects problem.

Hi alex, I have added the PPA as you told, however the 2.11 driver depends on libdrm-intel1 >= 2.4.18+git, which is not available. Did you also encountered this warning, or did you just ignored it and installed the driver any way?
