Bug Description

Binary package hint: gedit

Some applications can open files that have been gzipped or bzipped. For example:
1. Print a page to file (example.pdf, example.ps) from Firefox in Ubuntu 10.04
2. Gzip & Bzip both files (example.pdf.gz, example.pdf.bz2, example.ps.gz, example.ps.bz2) using the Nautilus context-menu "Compress..." item.
3. Observe that all six resulting files are associated with Evince, and can be opened without trouble.

Inkscape, GIMP and some other applications also support this on writing.

Similar functionality is desirable for gedit.

Thank you for your bug report. The issue is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug the to the people writting the software (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME)

Can you please be more specific in what feature you would like to see that isn't already there? In Ubuntu 10.04, you can double-click archives, then double-click text documents to open them in gedit. If you then change something and save, file-roller asks you if you want to update the file in the archive. So what exactly do you miss?

Martin, I think the difference should be clear if you compare the other software I reference.

The intermediate steps (using file-roller on open, and a confirmation on save) are NOT necessary using the other applications, and in fact the concept of "manipulating an archive" is not raised at all. Users only perceive that, for example, "example.svg.gz" created with Inkscape is smaller than "example.svg". The file opens directly in Inkscape.

This *is* a wishlist item: nothing is broken, I am only requesting more streamlined functionality.

Sorry, Paul, I was not aware of the fact that you can gzip only single files, so I though treating the archive as a folder would be better. Now I fully understand what you mean. I left a comment at the upstream bug stating that it is still an issue with gedit 2.30.2.

This should be fixed in upstream's gedit 2.31.2 : Implemented full support for compressed files (Jesse van den Kieboom)
