Is this issue being abandoned since no developer has access to a Windows platform?

Not really. I need a file handler counter before debugging the issue further. I just do not have time to ask on python-dev if such counter exists somewhere.

Perhaps some of the file handle leakage is related to unclosed mmap?

nothize: I run Windows with mingw32. :)

I think the title is too vague/broad; each failure should go into a different bug report.
