Can you rename ~/.eclipse and try again? All plugins will be gone. If it work, install your plugins step by step to find the plugin that causes this problem. Once you know which plugin causes the problem, let us know.

Renaming ~/.eclipse didn't help. After doing that, I did a "sudo apt-get purge eclipse && sudo apt-get autoremove" with the result, that I can't install eclipse anymore. It tells me:

eclipse: Depends: eclipse-jdt but it is not going to be installed
Depends: eclipse-pde but it is not going to be installed

I have currently have this issue with lucid on a new install of eclipse 3.5.2-2ubuntu4.1 with sun java 6 from the partner repositories. Eclipse completely hangs after asking me to choose workspace... splash screen appears, progress bar progresses until gets to "Loading Workbench" then hangs indefinitely.

Restarted computer , uninstalled all other java packages, deleted ~/.eclipse... ran from commandline... no help and no debugging information. ... it creates the workspace dir and then hangs. Another piece of info: I am on amd64.

Starting from the commandline the last time I got:

I: Injected update sites

Dunno what that means...

Then I tried starting with -debug. It gives me the following info.... also not very helpful.. all of this occurs before choosing the workspace.

I've tried installing eclipse 3.5.2 from eclipse.org and it works fine, so the workaround for now is to not use the ubuntu package.

I had the same problem on AMD64 machine because I was using a 32 bit version of Java. When I switched to a 64-bit Java it worked fine. Can you make sure you're using a 64-bit Java?

I am getting this bug, starting this morning on 64-bit lucid. I did notice that xulrunner was updated in the updates today, and wonder if that's just a coincidence.

In response to #13, how do I check that I'm using 64-bit Java (although it's hard to see how I could have that configured wrong; this is a very vanilla system with only a couple of unofficial programs, none of which have to do with java)?

Right now, I can do no development at all on this machine :-(

I ran into a possibly related bug.
I could work around this specific bug by renaming ~./eclipse, which didn't help, then renaming it again, and creating a new workspace. That allowed Eclipse to start, but after that, eclipse hung on showing suggestions.

I noticed I had two xulrunners installed, and removed the old one (1.9.1), leaving only 1.9.2
That resolved the new issue.
