Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

Ok..
this took a while to work out...

I am copying large files (over 1gig) across a 100Mb lan from ubuntu to a Fedora server using smb and i was getting slow file copy times, It would start of good and then slowly degrade with large pauses in the disk and network I/O until it would timeout.

So i spent some time testing samba (think server might be a fault), Until i noticed by chance that if i copyed a test file to a blank directory it would work fine. so i did another test to replicate the problem and also break it again..

As far as i can gather nautilus must be trying to generate previews or something and getting in the way of the file copy. also if i minimize nautilus the file copy speeds up

I hope this helps and if you need any more info/tests let me know as i have lots to copy to the server..

The Package is Nautilus 2.28.1 and the both systems are uptodate.

many thanks

calvin

Thanks for the report, could you try the same with Lucid and see if that works ok? Thanks in advance.

I am experiencing the same problem in lucid. Nautilus v. 2.30.1. All systems up to date. While writing a file to my NAS with Nautilus over smb/cifs, iftop shows the connection start to degrade until it times out. I just tried a test file to an empty folder on the NAS like Calvin and I have a much faster write speed and no time out. This behavior only happens when I write to the share from my computer. I can read without problem. I can copy from one share drive on the NAS to another drive also on the NAS without issue. In all cases, I sometimes have the connection drop to 0K transfer and recover without issue except when writing from the desktop to the NAS. Any ideas?

Not quite, My test file to a blank folder gets farther and is faster, but eventually also times out.

Update:I tested using the live cd of 11.04 and the problem still exists, BUT, I have discovered that I do not have the problem if I swap my D-Link DWA-552 adapter for my Linksys WUSB100. At this point I am not sure if it is something in Nautilus at fault or the wireless driver (I suspect the driver). The problem is only happening for me with the D-Link card and SMB/CIFS transfers with Nautilus. If anyone else comes to this bug with a similar problem, I would be interested to know if they have the AR922x Athereos hardware.

This can probably be closed, since there is only two of us with a problem and I can't commit it is Nautilus.
