Bug Description

Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 1

I have a laptop and when you close it without shutting down or suspending (or anything similar) Ubuntu, computer should go to sleep itself. So the lights on computer properly shows that computer has gone to sleep. It looks that everything is alright. But... when you open your computer you get only black screen and computer (or Ubuntu) doesn't wake up. Moreover, when you turn off computer by pressing the button on your laptop (which is used for turning on and should be used for turning off only with critical situations like this, when you can't do anything using OS) and after some time turn on the computer, Ubuntu doesn't load anymore. It launches scan but after all that it's not possible to load Ubuntu anymore. Also I have to mention that the same thing happened with Linux Mint. When I had Windows, everything was working fine, so I think it's a linux problem. I think it's a very important bug because closing laptop = loosing Ubuntu.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in linux.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it without more information.

Please first check if this is still an issue with the official release of Ubuntu 10.04.

If it is still happening, please run the following command which will attach necessary information:

apport-collect 562552
if you are using Karmic Koala (9.10) or newer, or

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` BUGNUMBER
if you are using Jaunty Jackalope (9.04).

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository with 'sudo apt-get install python-launchpadlib'. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.

If you are using an older release or cannot use apport please at least add the following information (pay attention to lspci's additional options):

First run the following commands:
1) uname -a > uname-a.log
2) dmesg > dmesg.log
3) sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
4) cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
then attach the files separately to the bug report (not pasted into comments or tar/zip-ed).

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I'm glad to see that you are interested in this bug. Sorry that you have to wait so long. I will try to provide the information you need as soon as possible. Actually I'm not very good in computers, but you gave me much useful information, so I think I will manage to do that. The problem is, now I'm running only Ubuntu 10.04, which I use for everyday work, and Windows. I don't want to risk loosing my data (I don't want to copy files to DVDs using live CD) and I have no space in my hard drive so I can't install another OS. I'm planning to copy all my data to DVDs, format the disk and install Ubuntu 10.10 when the final version will be released. But if you need the information about this bug faster, I could try to install beta instead of final version of Ubuntu 10.10. Of course it would be perfect if I could do what is needed with live CD, but I guess it's impossible...

Hello Tadas,

Thanks for your answer. The first information we require now is if your issue is still present on the official release of Ubuntu 10.04. You reported your issue against beta1, so you don't really have to install a new version.

If you are still on beta1, you should update your SO.

pura vida.

I've checked if this bug is still an issue of the final version of Ubuntu 10.04. I've closed my laptop about 10 times and everything is still OK with my Ubuntu 10.04. :) However, computer's going to sleep wasn't perfect. Actually it was perfect about 5 times and the other 5 times of closing laptop had some issues. I list them here:
1. After closing laptop and opening again the screen is black only with mouse cursor. Nothing happens after some minutes. (experienced about 2-3 times)
2. After ... everything is ok (locked screen-unlocking) A few seconds later the screen becoming black (you know, when it looks that something not normal happening with the screen, If necessary I can show a photo of this process). Not possible to control OS. (experienced 1 time)
3. Opened gimp, opened a photo there, applying cartoon effect, process taking place-closed laptop, while process is still taking place-opened-the screen looks the same as earlier: computer hasn't gone to sleep, the screen not locked, the process if still taking place-process (applying cartoon filter) ended-closed laptop-laptop didn't go to sleep-opened-closed all programs-laptop closed again-didn't go to sleep-some times repeated with the same result-choose 'shut down' from the menu in the top right corner-the normal shutting down purple screen (as boot splash)-after some minutes the computer is still in process of shutting down, that purple screen is still here-nothing changes (experienced 1 time, that was the only time I tried that with GIMP)

Overall, I sill experience issues when closing the laptop, but after turning off the computer with long pressing of the button in my laptop and booting Ubuntu again, everything look ok (there are no warnings), looks like booting normally and I believe it is so. Also I've realized that the result can be different each time so maybe that means that the risk of loosing an OS still exists. (However earlier one time was enough to make Ubuntu not to load again, so maybe now that issue doesn't exist no more).

Sorry for my English ;)

Thank you.

Hi Tadas,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 562552

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

now I've made a test and have a question for you.

Firstly, the test.
----------------------------------------------------
Ubuntu 10.10, all updates installed
One session=from turning on, till turning of the computer
Numbers - times of closing-opening laptop, or simply times of testing the bug
First times from other ones in the same session are different because in the second ones music were plying when closing the laptop. However, playing music has no impact.

The first test (session)
 1-ok
 2-ok
 3-ok
 4-ok
 5-ok

 music playing
 6-ok
 7-ok
 8-ok
 9-ok
 10-ok

The second test (session) - no sleep indication, something fails, but when you open laptop you get basicly the same view as when unlocking locked computer, only the mobile 3d internet is turned off as after sleep; everything is ok
1- almost ok (like lock scr, not sleep)
2- almost ok (like lock scr, not sleep)
 3- same result
 4- same result
 5- same result

 music playing
 6- closed->stop playing->pause->continues playing->opened laptop->ok
 7- same result

The third test (session)
 1-ok
 2-ok
 3-ok

 music playing
 4-ok
 5-ok

------------------------------------------------------------------------

So now closing laptop worked fine except the second session, but I don't know why. However, everything is getting better and better (see the results of the test with 10.04). :)
So I have a question: what to do for me with this bug and should I create another bug because of the test results of the second session? Now that what happens is not what I've written in the bug description some months ago. Maybe everything is as good as the bug should be deleted?

I had problems with closing the laptop with windows vista (problems with display after opening closed laptop), but everything was fixed in windows 7. Now I see that the problem is leaving Linux too. :)

Thanks for everyone who makes Ubuntu better! The today's test results amazed me :))

Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:

kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
