Bug Description

Binary package hint: transmission

Lucid Lynx, up to date as of a few hours ago.

Firefox complains that no program is associated with magnet links.

Setting it up using:

gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/magnet/command '/usr/bin/transmission %s' --type String
gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/magnet/enabled --type Boolean true

Gets it to work.

It seems like a shame to have that one final piece prevent it from working in Lucid.

I can't reproduce it on the guest account, Transmission does set itself
as a magnet link handler on the first launch. The only case it doesn't
do it is if another application has already registered itself and it
doesn't seem to be the case here.
Have you launched transmission before clicking on a magnet link?

That's probably it. I'm testing Lucid on a system I don't usually do torrent downloads on. I remembered that magnet links should work now and wanted to test it, but I had not run transmission before testing it.

My bad :)

Actually, with magnet links becoming more common, it's not improbable that the first torrent download someone would try would be through one. How difficult would it be to register a system default during the package install?

It's something I'd like to investigate for Maverick (I think we could
create a schema file and put it somewhere in the system-wide gconf
configuration path). Unfortunately it's too late to start working on
that for Lucid.

Does this behavior still need to be fixed for 11.04?
