Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

The update from 1.6.13.0-1ubuntu1 to 1.6.13.0-1ubuntu2 was supposed to disable XV for rn50 class GPUs, but it has also disabled it on my RV100, where I've had working XV since 2003. It hasn't been working so well since the lucid update, but that's a different bug.

bgruber (bgruber) wrote : Re: xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.13.0-1ubuntu2 has disabled my working XV

this should be really low priority. with KMS enabled, XV overlay isn't supported, and with KMS disabled, XV isn't disabled. was there a change that turned off XV entirely if overlay isn't supported?

I have the same problem on an ATI mobility M6. How can I disable KMS? What is KMS?

KMS stands for kernel mode-setting, a great new tech but which required changes in drivers.

Anyway. Could you try to install the -ati driver from https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/drivers-only ? It's recent enough that it contains a fix that was titled "xv: fix Xv on M6/RV100 under KMS.".

It's only four lines of code so it could be considered for 10.04 LTS update as well if it truly fixes the problem for everyone: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-ati/commit/?id=426114b4a99d37b394efe3336968bb0ab9b6e9ae

Hooray! Having installed xserver-xorg-video-ati and -radeon from the drivers-only ppa, for the first time ever, I have desktop effects, XV overlay and KMS all running at the same time.

correction, i now have XV textured video, not overlay. Fullscreen performance is not usable. While it's better than nothing, I'm going to go back to my non-KMS setup.

Fixed in xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.13.1 which has just been uploaded to maverick.

xserver-xorg-video-ati (1:6.13.1-1ubuntu1) maverick; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian Unstable. Remainning Ubuntu changes:
    + debian/control:
      - Add quilt to build-depends for Ubuntu patches
    + debian/patches/100_radeon-6.9.0-bgnr-enable.patch:
      - Smooth plymouth transition enablement patch
    + debian/rules:
      - Add xsfbs patchsys
      - Drop /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf install.
    + debian/xserver-xorg-video-ati.{pre,post}inst.in:
      - Clean existing /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf on install.
At best this does nothing (KMS is the default for our kernel)
and at worst it makes it harder to disable KMS.
  * Add debian/gbp.conf pointing to Ubuntu branch to make git-buildpackage
    less narky.
  * Drop 102-no-xv-rn50.patch and 103_new_pci_ids.patch from previous
Ubuntu releases, they are upstream now.
