Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-26-386

I today installed the latest xubuntu (6.06.1). I had the same problem with regular ubuntu 6.06. Booting install cd fails at mounting root filesystem. I use "ide=nodma" and remove "quiet splash --" to make it work. After installing Xubuntu and rebooting the same thing happens as when booting from the install cd. It hangs at mounting root filesystem. Again I can get it to boot with the ide=nodma.

I also tried the recovery kernel. It has some difficulty but it manages to give me a root prompt without any special kernel options.

after rebooting I got grub error 17. Maybe just from trying to boot without disabling dma? I tried e2fsck but there were thousands of errors, so I just reinstalled completely.

I noticed some extra problems in my dmesg:

after reboot I get again Error 17 from grub :(
All I did was boot recovery kernel, write dmesg and lsmod to disk, enable my wireless network card and scp the logs to my other box for posting here and rebooting. I booted from the cd with ide=nodma and tried to e2fsck -p /dev/hda1, but the there is a bad magic number in the super-block and also in the alternate super-block. Then I tried to mke2fs -S /dev/hda1 to reinitialize the super-blocks. e2fsck -p /dev/hda finds unexpected errors. e2fsck -y /dev/hda does a gazillion things. Almost as if every inode has been corrupted. After it finishes and after rebooting I get grub error 15, so I guess booting without ide-nodma does hose my filesystem. This is very bad indeed.

Try following this suggestiong.

Also, please don't paste such large content into comments. There's an
"attach" option for the bug report for such output.

Thanks

Marijn, would it be possible for you to test this against a 2.6.20 kernel, e.g., Feisty (warning, development release, please backup all valuable data).

(as also stated on the kernel bug: )

I tried to boot with Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 i386, but ide=nodma doesn't let me do
that anymore, nor did "acpi=off noapic ide=nodma". I get a lot of:

ata1.00: configured for UDMA/33
ata1: EH complete
ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen

then later:

ata1.00: configured for UDMA/25
ata1: EH complete
ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen

This last bit keeps on repeating longer than my patience.

The installed XUbuntu 6.06 still works fine with ide=nodma, thus my harddrive
is still fine.

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!

I could install and use 8.04 by using the ``all-generic-ide'' (I forget the exact one) kernel boot option. I still had to add this manually to the grub configuration file to be able to boot the installed version and there is a silly line as the machine boots that says that the option is not used or something like that, which is simply nonsense.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Martin, I'd misread that comment, my apologies. I've reopened this, let's try a few things.

You've obviously done some of the work in [1] but if you could review it and attach logs (syslog) from booting with the suggested parameters, that would be great. I think you've done everything in [2], so no need to revisit that right now. Most important thing is to attach the output of a couple of commands, as per [3]:

    dmesg
    lspci -vv
    lspci -vvn

E.g.,

   % sudo su
   # dmesg > dmesg.out
   # lspci -vv > lspcivv.out
   # lspci -vvn > lspcivvn.out

It might also be useful to review [4] and try the diagnostics suggested there.

Once you've got this diagnostic information, I'd recommend reopening the upstream bug and attaching the info there as well. Finally, if you could try all of this with Intrepid and report any differences, that would be useful as well.

Sorry to load you up so, but from reviewing this and the upstream reports, this problems seems a right puzzle!
