Lucid fails to boot after last update

Bug Description

After applying Ubuntu 10.04 today's updates the system fails to boot. It worked fine until yesterday. Now just after the operating system choice through grub and selecting the latest Ubuntu Linux 2.6.32-20, the following errors appear on screen and the system freezes:

The problem occurred on a laptop.
