Bug Description

I went to Europe (6/23/06), and wanted to watch a region 2 dvd. I found the regionset command, and it successfully changed the region to 2. However since I have been home (7/1/06) I've been unable to change the region back to region 1.

This is what I see:
regionset version 0.1 -- reads/sets region code on DVD drives
Current Region Code settings:
RPC Phase: II
type: SET
vendor resets available: 4
user controlled changes resets available: 3
drive plays discs from region(s): 2, mask=0xFD

Would you like to change the region setting of your drive? [y/n]:y
Enter the new region number for your drive [1..8]:1
New mask: 0xFFFFFFFE, correct? [y/n]:y
ERROR: Region code could not be set!

If I do an strace, this is what I get:
write(1, "New mask: 0xFFFFFFFE, correct? ["..., 37New mask: 0xFFFFFFFE, correct? [y/n]:) = 37
read(0, y
"y", 1) = 1
read(0, "\n", 1) = 1
ioctl(3, DVD_AUTH, 0x804c180) = -1 EIO (Input/output error)
write(1, "ERROR: Region code could not be "..., 37ERROR: Region code could not be set!

Might this be a hardware issue, or a kernel issue, or something else? I'm not sure where to start.

Thank you for your bug report. Have you ever changed the region before? It is likely that your hardware is limited to fixed number of changes (usually 5) and you will not be able to switch it back to region 1.

I have changed the region once. regionset correctly reports (as you can see) that I should have 3 user changes and 4 vendor changes left.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.
