Thanks for taking time to report this bug. Can you please confirm if this is also an issue during a normal IM chat(not IRC)

No, this is the same for all messaging protocols.

Can you please check in sound preferences if alert volume is muted or very low. I cant reproduce this issue.

No problem with sound at all in any other application. Empathy simply does not make any sound when set to.

I was having the same problem, then I remembered I set the "Sound theme" in "System > Preferences > Sound" to "No sounds". Setting this back to "Ubuntu" fixed the problem for me.

I don't think that's the problem I'm having. I would know if I had set the system to "No sounds"...

Note: Also happens in Maverick

I have the same problem, but found a solution, that worked for me at least:
I noticed, that after installing the package "sound-theme-freedesktop" and setting the sound theme to default in the audio properties, empathy made sounds. So I decided to look at the files and found the following: There is a file named "message.oga" in the freedesktop-sound-theme, but there's no "message.ogg" in ubuntu's sound theme. So I just created one and empathy now makes works like I'd expect.

In other words: /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/message.ogg is missing and needed by empathy to make a sound for incoming and outgoing messages.

Hope that helps other people as well.

This doesn't actually fix it for me, removing from description.

Drawing on straws here but: The sound-file used for incoming messages ("message-new-instant.ogg") is extremely quiet (too quiet for my taste at least). Even with alert volume at maximum I can barely hear it. Maybe that's the same with you. So maybe try to use a sound-file, that's louder?

The aforementioned "message.ogg" is only used for outgoing messages. I'm not sure any more which of my first posted steps fixed it for me.

No that's not it. Sending and receiving messages, connecting, disconnecting... all of the sound options are set in empathy and still nothing, even unchecked the "disable sounds while busy or away" - and still nothing. The volume level of message-new-instant.ogg seems fine on my laptop speakers, but then the sound is right next to me, and it makes no difference. The sounds simply are not being played.

For some strange reason this is now working in Maverick. May have been the recent indicator updates. Fix Released.
