I notice you have virtualbox-ose installed, does the freezing still occur with that uninstalled?

It just happened again (virtualbox-ose is not installed), but this time the symptoms changed. The screen shows a corrupted image, goes black, shows a corrupted image, goes black, and so on. Switching to another VT did not work, but I was able to reboot the system with the sysrq keys.

I am going to test whether a merged xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.13.0-1 helps.

There is nothing in your logs indicating that this is happening, can you please run apport-collect 557688 directly after reproducing this problem (and rebooting of course) so we can further troubleshoot it?

The system is crash-free for three days now. Maybe this bug was triggered by the kernel and not xserver-xorg-video-ati. I am closing the bug for now. If it crashed again, I will reopen it and let apport collect data.

The system crashed three times on that day. I installed the mainline 2.6.33 kernel and no crash has happened since then (two days). Could it be a kernel bug?

It is extremely common for these types of freezes to be caused by issues in the kernel drm, so yes.

Especially if by booting a different kernel the issue goes away, that tends to be a very strong indicator the issue lays in the kernel.

Benjamin Drung, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please capture the oops following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
