The solutions posted by Gamex are meant for a different distro, and require applications non-existant for Ubuntu.

I don't think this issue should be closed: My computer is "living proof" that, despite everything that has been posted about this, I cannot hear any sounds on Firefox.

It looks like you have a Windows version of Flash installed in your home directory as well as the Linux version. Is there a way to test without your windows directory mounted?

@Krantz Please attach your bug here so that we can look what is the real problem. By the way, you can try reinstalling phonon backend and mp3 playback. But not sure if it will work.

Open terminal and enter these:
sudo aptitude install phonon-backend-xine
sudo apt-get install libxine1-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
