Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Hardware: HP Compaq dc79000 Convertible Minitower <https://h10057.www1.hp.com/ecomcat/hpcatalog/specs/provisioner/05/KP719AV.htm>, Eizo FlexScan L557 (connected with D-SUB, aka VGA), HP LP2475w (connected with DP).

Software: Ubuntu 9.10, Intel i915 driver

Symptoms: The HP screen turns off, the keyboard becomes unresponsive (None of Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-Del and Caps Lock work), but the Ubuntu background can still be seen on the Eizo screen and the mouse pointer can be moved there.

Symptoms (safe mode boot):
Many instances of "[drm:intel_dp_aux_ch] *ERROR* dp_aux_ch not done status 0x007500c8" followed by eight instances of "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 61s! [i915/1:376]". Then nothing.

How to reproduce: Leave the PC on for long enough.

Reproducible: Not systematically. Usually the problem occurs after leaving the computer on for some time. After the problem occurs, it usually occurs quickly after the next hard boot. It doesn't seem to matter whether it's heavily used or not. I'm not running any 3D software or games.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

I can't help anymore, since I've changed hardware. For the future, is there some other place to report these kinds of bugs to get more feedback?

This should have been fixed i.e. the lockup prevent in recent kernels (by adding timeouts to prevent this driver error). Note that is you are running upstream components (such as carried in ppa:xorg-edgers and ppa:mainline) you can file an upstream bug in bugs.freedesktop.org - though we will expect you to be able to build kernels and the like in order to test patches.
